portland’s first ranked-choice election: a closer look

Last year was an election year unlike any other, and here in Portland, we voted in the city’s inaugural Ranked-Choice Voting election.

We wanted to get analysis out to folks as soon as we could, and so in February of 2025, we hosted “Portland’s First Ranked-Choice Election: A Closer Look,” a briefing in partnership with FM3, Sightline, and FairVote.

During the briefing, we jumped into an overview of research so far, including polling data about Portland voters’ experience using ranked choice for the first time. We also explored questions like:

  • Did election outcomes live up to expectations?

  • How did voters feel about ranking candidates?

  • What are national points of comparison?
